Bachata Butterfly Dance Philosophy

Dear Dancers, these are the dance standards I hold myself to and hold you to as dancers in our community, class, and events in order to create a welcoming and safe environment for you and every dancer here.

I encourage you to reflect on how these feel in your body as you read them.

(Note: This was inspired by Zouk Army’s Code of Conduct <3 Thank you for all you do, friends!)

1. Love yourself and your Journey

We are here to dance because it brings us joy; it is not a math test. Give yourself grace and compassion on your dance journey.

2. Everyone is always learning

Give others grace and compassion on their dance journey.  People will always remember how you made them feel. Set an intention to give the energy you want to receive in your dances. Only give feedback if/when asked and in I statements.

3. All bodies are welcome here

Regardless of gender, sexuality, skin color, age, size, ability, religion, ethnicity, etc.

4. Trust you body and be aware of your boundaries

If something physically hurts, or you’re uncomfortable doing a move (for any reason), communicate with your partner. There is no need to do any move that does not feel good to you. Have a physical or emotional limitation or boundary? Verbally/clearly communicate that to your partner. If you need to rest, then rest.

5. You may always say (and accept) no graciously

You have every right to decide who you want to dance with. If you do not want to dance, it’s perfectly okay to say “No, thank you” politely. You do not need to add a reason, explanation, nor justification; “No, thank you” is enough. When you receive a “No, thank you” there may be a million reason why that person doesn’t want to dance at that time. That reason is theirs, so there is no need to question them, move on to someone else.

If you have any questions, feedback, or need help please don’t hesitate to reach out.
